HARSHVARDHAN MITTAL

DEPARTMENT: CIVIL ENGINEERING
HALL: LBS Hall of Residence

PROPOSAL I

My first proposal is to incorporate an Inter IIT Cultural Cell in the institution which would be headed by the captains of the different genres and would aim to promote the participation from the students of IIT Kharagpur in the Inter IIT Cultural Meet.

Requirement:

  1. The Inter IIT Cultural Meet being only 2 years old is a fairly new concept and viable to many changes. There can be changes in events and in their rules. Who knows them better than the captains of the various cups. The captains would be spearheading this cell and would be responsible for the conduction of workshops.
  2. For the workshops, there exists the requirement of professionals from outside the campus which would be looked after by the captains.

Activities of the Cell:

The Cell would mainly start functioning in the month of October after the students return from the Durga Puja holidays. Every student interested in any genre that falls under the social and cultural aspect is allowed to be a part of the cell. The captains would be responsible for the training of the students in their respective fields and would conduct various workshops dedicated to improve the skills of the students.

It is the responsibility of the Captains and the General Secretaries to take note of the promising students and urge them to be a part of the contingent for the Inter IIT Cultural Meet. This would be a fair chance for everyone to demonstrate their skills and to represent our Institute on the National level among all the IITs.

Post the Meet, the cell would work as a medium for like minded individuals to meet and organize any event that they wish to and feel would be popular among the student body and motivate more people to participate in the next Inter IIT Cultural Meet.

The General Secretaries Social and Cultural would have to submit a report at the end of the academic year which would highlight all the activities undertaken by the Cell and hoe it impacted the students of IIT Kharagpur.

Hierarchy:

The hierarchy of the Cultural Cell would be as follows:

  1. The Captain and the Vice Captain of the Inter IIT contingent
  2. Advisors
  3. The captains of the various cups of Inter IIT Cultural Meet.
  4. The members of the contingent.

The General Secretaries Social and Cultural would be the overall heads of the Cell and would look after the overall working of the cell.

The Advisors would be the Captain , Vice Captain and various captains of each cup from the previous Inter IIT Cultural Meet conducted and the previous General Secretaries Social and Cultural, Technology Students’ Gymkhana.

Benefits:

  • This would work in development of the skills of the students of IIT Kharagpur in the cultural genre.
  • The selection process for the contingent of Inter IIT Cultural Meet would be absolutely transparent.
  • Shall help people interact more with each other during workshops which would work as the social aspect.
  • Appendix 1:

On consultation with many people namely Mr. Harsh Sharan, Mr. Aman Choudhary, Mr. Vaibhav Dusad, Mr. Ankit Singh, Mr. Lalit Khemlani and Mr. Apurv Singhal, the proposal is found to be feasible and would only work towards the betterment of the institution.

    Future Scope:

If elected as General Secretary Social ad Cultural, I would strive to take forward this endeavour of mine. There would be an online portal which would list out the various captains and would have a query option. Every person interested in an event can register on that portal which would make the captains aware of a probable participant.

    PROPOSAL 2

My second proposal is to introduce an event named Cult Night which would exclusively be for the Postgraduates and the Research Scholars students. It would be conducted in 3 Halls of Residence namely Bhimrao Ambedkar Hall of Residence, Sister Nivedita Hall of Residence and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Hall of Residence. The events that would be conducted are Dumb C, Open Mics, Antakshri and Solo Singing. These short events would help the students to be more involved in the social and cultural happenings of the institute and would act as a medium of recreation for them.

    Requirement:

In the past few years, it has been observed that there is a decrease in participation of the postgraduate and research scholar students in the social and cultural sphere. To make them more enthusiastic towards it, some steps have to be taken.

    Implementation:

The Sister Nivedita Hall of residence would act as a venue for the female students while the other two Halls of Residence would be for the male students.

The events to be conducted would be short and wouldn’t act as an extra load on the students.

The event would be conducted in the first week of September.

    Appendix 1:

    Rules for Open Mic competition:

These sessions will be open to all, anyone who is interested to participate can come to perform as well as to enjoy. Each individual will be given 5 min to present their work.

  • The team with the least score wins the event and would get a prize.
  • The guesser cannot speak out anything or prompt to his/her teammates. If found doing so, the team would be warned once and then disqualified.

  • Rules for Antakshri:

Antakshri has been a favorite game for everyone in their childhood. This event would help bring back fond memories for the students and be very enjoyable.

  • The students would participate in teams of 5 members.
  • The team would be given 10 seconds in which they have to sing the song.
  • The song has to start with the last letter of the song sung by the opposite team.
  • A team would initially have a total of 2 points. If it fails to sing the song, a point would be deducted. The team retaining at least 1 point at the end of the game would be the winner.
  • The songs cannot be repeated once sung.

  • Rules for Solo Singing:

  • The time limit for the performance is 3 minutes with a penalty of 20% if a student exceeds it by 15 seconds. After 15 seconds, the participant would be disqualified.
  • The student can sing the song in Hindi or English.
  • No foul words should be used in the song.
  • The Judging criteria would depend on:
    1. Quality of Voice
    2. Pronunciation of lyrics
    3. Clarity
    4. Mood and expression

I believe that the events would be a huge step in encouraging the postgraduate and the research scholar students to be involved in the social and cultural activities of the institute.

With consultation from the various members of MMM Hall of Residence and Sister Nivedita Hall of Residence, I found that it is quite feasible to conduct the event and would expect a huge turnout.
